Nokia has unveiled the Nokia 701, one of three new handsets that will launch with Symbian Belle on board. But Nokia's next-generation OS isn't the only detail worth getting excited about. Read on as we help you get better acquainted with this attractive new handset.
According to Nokia's new naming convention, the Nokia 701 is nominally the most high-end of the new releases we've seen so far, sitting above the Nokia 500, Nokia 600 and the Nokia 700 in the company's revamped smartphone lineup.
We're still a way away from the Nokia 701 – and Symbian Belle, for that matter – appearing in the flesh, so let's take the time to check out the key facts worth knowing about.
Symbian Belle
The Nokia 701 looks to be a great piece of hardware, but it's the software that's the big attraction here. The Nokia 701 will ship with Symbian Belle already on board. That means you'll be able to enjoy the luxury of six homescreens, free-form resizeable widgets, NFC and plenty of other exciting new features.
Super-bright screen
The 3.5-inch screen is a great size, giving you plenty of screen to work with without it feeling like you've got a TV in your pocket as with the gargantuan devices we're seeing more and more these days. And while the Nokia 700 is rightly in the limelight as the slimmest Nokia smartphone ever made, the Nokia 701's 11mm profile isn't far behind.
The brightest screen ever
It can be frustrating when bright sunlight means you can't see what's on your phone's screen. Well the Nokia 701 is the answer – Nokia reckons its super-bright display makes it the brightest smartphone on the market bar none.
Attractive on the eye
All three of the Symbian Belle debutants have their own design characteristics, which we're pleased to see. In the Nokia 701's case, it's all about style. You won't find a straight edge in sight, and the stainless steel finish with satin texture and Gorilla Glass screen leave you in no doubt that this is a high-quality piece of mobile hardware.
High-quality camera
Being an upper-mid-range handset we're not surprised to see an 8-megapixel snapper on board with dual-LED flash, geotagging and , fixed focus,, that Nokia has thrown in a little bonus. It was a glimpse
Front-facing camera
One feature on the Nokia 701 we're surprised hasn't received more attention than it has is the presence of a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls. It's another feature that gives the Nokia 701 an identity all of its own in Nokia's smartphone portfolio.
The engine room
Practically every new smartphone Nokia has introduced lately has been fitted with a 1GHz processor, and the Nokia 701 doesn't break the trend. We're certainly not complaining, and on a handset such as the Nokia 701 it should deliver a decent turn of speed.
Plenty of storage
Whether it's taking photos with the 8-megapixel or loading the Nokia 701 up with your favourite tunes, you'll need some on-board storage to put it all. Nokia has equipped the Nokia 701 with a generous 8GB of storage to help you along, and there's always the microSD slot should you want to add more.
All aboard for NFC
Nokia says NFC capability will be on board every new Symbian phone from now on, and looking at the kind of features Nokia 701 users can look forward to, that's no surprise. The potential for wireless data transfer and pairing simply by touching two NFC-capable devices together impressive ondeed is a great new feature, and we're looking forward to seeing the technology develop even further in the months ahead.
Battery life
It's no secret that Nokia and Symbian are very power-efficient, and the Nokia 701 is another Nokia handset with some very impressive battery life stats. You can chat away merrily for as much as 17 continuous hours before the battery gives out on you, while standby time is a full 551 hours.
